Are You Keeping Good Oral Hygiene Habits?

Who says caring for your smile has to be difficult?

Your smile deserves the very best care, and here in Grand Rapids, MI, our dentist Dr. Robert Dame and his team want to make sure that you are getting the proper professional routine checkups to ensure that you maintain a beautiful and healthy smile. Of course, there are always certain habits you should adopt to support healthy teeth and gums,

Brush twice a day

The very best way to remove plaque and bacteria from the front, back and chewing surfaces of your teeth is by brushing. Make sure that you are brushing at least twice a day (it’s even better if you can brush after each meal and snack) with fluoride toothpaste and that you are brushing at least two minutes each time.

Flossing daily

Along with brushing, flossing is another habit that you cannot possibly skip out on if you want healthy teeth and gums. In fact, if you don’t floss your teeth every day, you are leaving almost half of your smile unclean. Flossing is truly the best way to remove plaque, food particles and bacteria from between teeth. Try to floss your teeth before brushing for an even deeper clean.

Ditch the cigarettes

Smoking and other tobacco products can wreak havoc on your oral health. Not only does it cause bad breath and yellow teeth, but it also greatly impacts the health of your smile. Using tobacco can increase your risk for gum disease, cavities and even oral cancer. If you’re having trouble ditching the habit your dentist may be able to recommend local support groups and other options to help make quitting easier.

Use Mouthwash

While mouthwash can certainly make your breath smell great, it does far more than just hide that garlic pasta you had for lunch. The right mouthwash can actually kill bacteria responsible for cavities and gum disease. Avoid mouthwash that contains alcohol (alcohol can dry out your mouth and increase decay) and make sure to rinse for 30-60 seconds.
