Gum disease can be treated if it's detected in the early stages. Unfortunately, the longer you delay treatment, the worse the potential gum diseaseconsequences to your oral health. Dr. Robert S. Dame, your Grand Rapids, MI family dentist at North Park Family Dental, shares a few symptoms of gum disease.

Common gum disease symptoms

If you have gum disease, you may notice one or more of these symptoms:

A change in your gums: Gum disease causes your gums to become red and swollen and bleed easily. If you notice that your gums bleed frequently when you brush your teeth or that they look inflamed and swollen, you may have gingivitis, the mildest form of the disease. Prompt treatment will prevent the disease from progressing.

Bad breath: As the disease worsens, your gums begin to pull away from your teeth and form pockets. Bacteria invades the pockets causing bad breath.

Sensitive teeth: Gum disease may cause your gums to recede, exposing your sensitive roots. Every time your teeth are exposed to the air or you drink or eat hot or cold foods and beverages, you may experience pain.

Loose teeth: When pockets form, your gums are no longer able to adequately support your teeth. Gum disease can also cause dental implants to loosen.

Loose dentures: Changes in your gums can also affect the way dentures fit.

How can my dentist help?

Make an appointment with your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms. If you have gingivitis, a thorough cleaning and an increased emphasis on oral hygiene may be all that's needed to solve the problem. When pockets have formed, your dentist may recommend deep cleaning to remove tartar deposits, antibiotics and antimicrobial mouth rinses. If gum disease is severe, you may need surgery to reduce the size of your pockets or bone and tissue grafts.
