Q. What are dental veneers?

A. Veneers are thin, translucent shells that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve your smile’s appearance, color or shape.

Q. When are dental veneers used?

A. Your cosmetic dentist in Grand Rapids may recommend veneers if you are dealing with any of these issues:

  • Small cosmetic chips or cracks
  • Severe stains and discolorations
  • Misshapen or uneven teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor overcrowding

Q. What are they made out of?

A. Veneers are often made from either porcelain or composite resin because they offer the look that most closely resembles a natural tooth. They even boast a similar translucency to real teeth.

Q. How are veneers placed?

A. Before veneers can be placed we will need to prepare your tooth by removing a very small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers. This preparation is painless and doesn’t typically require anesthesia. But once enamel is removed the procedure can’t be reversed.

Temporary veneers may need to be placed over your teeth until your custom-made ones are ready. Once they are fabricated you will come back into our office for a final fitting where we will permanently bond the veneers to your teeth using a special dental cement.

Q. Do veneer require special care?

A. One benefit of veneers is that you can treat them just as you would natural teeth. But this doesn’t mean you can abuse them, either! You will still need to maintain good oral hygiene and brush and floss every day. You’ll also want to stay away from hard foods, teeth clenching or nail biting, which can damage or pull off your veneers.

Q. Are veneers right for me?

A. If you are dealing with any of the above dental flaws and are looking for a cosmetic treatment that will improve the overall look of your smile then veneers may be the right option for you. But the only way to truly find out if you are right for veneers is to schedule an exam with us.
